Season of protest

When Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama broke his promise to remove American Marines from Okinawa, the island's people took to the streets to express their rage. The betrayal split the ruling party and triggered Hatoyama's resignation. Buckling to pressure from the United States, he decided against moving the military base off the island -- a policy his successors continue.  To view The Washington Post video package, visit here.
